Winter Storm to Bring Snow, Ice, and Rain Across the U.S. This Weekend
A powerful storm system emerging from the Rockies is set to deliver a mix of ice, snow, and rain to vast portions of the United States this weekend, potentially impacting millions. Meteorologists warn of widespread travel disruptions and dangerous conditions across more than a dozen states.
Snow and Ice to Blanket the Midwest
According to AccuWeather, regions in the central U.S. are bracing for snow and ice accumulation, while the South faces rain and thunderstorms. Snowfall could reach northern Oklahoma, with significant accumulation expected from central Nebraska to Ohio by early Monday.
“Accumulating snow, potentially exceeding six inches, could bring travel to a standstill in cities such as Kansas City, St. Louis, Indianapolis, and Cincinnati,” said AccuWeather meteorologist Brandon Buckingham.
The National Weather Service (NWS) forecasts that the storm system will move into the Southern High Plains on Saturday and into the Southern Plains by Sunday. Heavy snowfall is expected along and north of Interstate 70, particularly in the Central Plains and Mississippi Valley.
Dangerous Ice Conditions Forecast
Sleet and freezing rain are predicted to impact areas from eastern Kansas to the Tennessee and lower Ohio Valleys. Forecasters warn of a significant freezing rain event, particularly across the northern Ozarks, middle Mississippi Valley, and Ohio Valley.
“Dangerous ice accretions could lead to power outages, tree damage, and hazardous travel conditions in the hardest-hit areas,” Buckingham cautioned.
Lake-Effect Snow and Cold Air in the Northeast
Meanwhile, cold high pressure moving eastward will combine with upper-level energy to produce lake-effect snow in the Northeast. Moderate to heavy snow is anticipated downwind from the Great Lakes through Sunday, with additional snowfall in the Central Appalachians.
Thunderstorms to Sweep the South
In the southern U.S., the storm will bring rain and thunderstorms over the weekend. Showers are expected to develop in the Southern Plains and Lower Mississippi Valley on Saturday night, intensifying into thunderstorms by Sunday.
“A line of storms is likely to strengthen as it moves through eastern Texas, Louisiana, Arkansas, Mississippi, and Alabama on Sunday,” said AccuWeather meteorologist Gwen Fieweger.
Travel and Power Concerns Loom
The storm’s impacts will include severe travel disruptions, power outages, and potentially hazardous conditions for residents in affected areas. Forecasters urge caution and preparedness as the system moves across the country.
