US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) agents detained a Venezuelan man on active felony warrants in Buffalo, New York, on Wednesday, according to a news release on Thursday.
CBP officers identified the man as 32-year-old Naxer Acevedo Escalona, who was driving a 2016 Nissan Altima when he made a wrong left onto the Peace Bridge border crossing at the Port of Buffalo.
The National Crime Information Center (NCIC) at the primary inspection location reported the vehicle’s theft to the Chicago Police Department. CBP officials then led Escalona to the secondary inspection area for further scrutiny, where they discovered he had active felony warrants from Colorado.
CBP officials learned that they were seeking Escalona for armed robbery and car theft after calling the Arapahoe County Sheriff’s Office. The announcement also confirmed that the CBP agents reported the vehicle as stolen to the Chicago Police Department.
The Buffalo Police Department received Escalona into custody and is holding him while awaiting extradition.
“Thanks to the outstanding work of our CBP officers, another criminal was removed from our streets,” said Area Port Director Gaetano Cordone. “Our continued coordination with our State and Local partners helped to put this dangerous individual in jail.”
