Five individuals were successfully rescued from the Mississippi River following a reported collision between a tugboat and a ship. The Coast Guard confirmed that the incident occurred near the Hale Boggs Bridge at approximately 7:41 pm, as stated by NBC affiliate WDSU.
According to officials from St. Charles, the Patrick J, a tug boat, collided with the Clara B, a Liberian ship, resulting in the sinking of the tug boat. The five individuals who were rescued have been taken to the hospital for evaluation. At this time, it is uncertain whether any of the rescued individuals sustained any injuries.
According to authorities, the cause of the crash is still under investigation. Following the collision, a section of the river was temporarily closed on Sunday night but has since been reopened.
St. Charles Parish authorities are currently investigating the diesel spill from the sunken tugboat after the collision. The exact amount of diesel that has spilled into the water remains unknown at this time.
However, as a precautionary measure, the authorities have closed the water intake from the river to ensure that the parish’s water supply remains unaffected.
The Louisiana Oil Spill Coordinator’s Office has reported that the crew’s ability to assess the spill has been hindered by fog.
In order to create a response plan, crews are considering using drones. Local officials are closely monitoring both the water and air quality as a precautionary measure.
The Coast Guard is currently conducting an investigation into the cause of the collision and assessing the environmental impact it may have had.
