It was another beautiful day today in Hastings, Nebraska, with temperatures reaching the 50’s and mostly sunny skies. However, cloud cover is moving into the area this evening as a storm system approaches.
Tonight, temperatures will drop back into the mid to upper 30’s. Tomorrow morning, winds will remain light, but they will quickly pick up from west to east as windy conditions are expected along with precipitation.
Tomorrow, temperatures will warm up ahead of a cold front, reaching the low to mid 40’s for most areas, while northern Nebraska will see upper 30’s and south central Nebraska and northern Kansas will experience low 50’s.
The precipitation is expected to start as rain, but as temperatures cool, a transition to snow is likely. The areas with the best chance of seeing precipitation tomorrow are Thedford, the Tri-Cities, Hebron, and the areas to the northeast of that line.
Precipitation amounts ranging from one-tenth of an inch to half an inch are possible, with higher amounts expected northeast of the Tri-Cities.
Snowfall amounts are not expected to be significant, with around an inch possible in the Tri-Cities along I-80 into Lincoln, and higher amounts of up to 4 inches in some spots to the north.
The precipitation will be quick, ending late tomorrow night around midnight.
Despite lower snowfall amounts, travel will likely be impacted due to wind gusts of around 30 to 40 mph, which will reduce visibility with any falling snow.
This system will also result in cooler temperatures following its passage. It is expected that temperatures will drop to the mid-30s until New Year’s Day.
On Tuesday morning, the skies will clear up rapidly, allowing for plenty of sunshine from Tuesday through Wednesday.
However, temperatures will remain around average during this period. By Thursday, temperatures will further decline to the low 30s, accompanied by increasing cloud cover towards the end of the week.
This is due to another potential storm system that could move in over the weekend.
This upcoming system comes with a lot of uncertainties, but it also brings the potential for widespread winter precipitation. However, one thing that is more certain is the arrival of cold air following the system. We can expect temperatures to drop into the 20s during the weekend and even into the teens as we move into the next week.
