A security guard at a T.J. Maxx store in Brooklyn was slashed in the face while trying to stop a group of female shoplifters, according to police sources. The incident took place on Sunday afternoon around 2:17 p.m. at the store in Midwood, when the thieves allegedly stole $243 worth of clothing and shoes.
As the three women attempted to flee the store, a 33-year-old security guard confronted them. One of the robbers reportedly pulled out a knife and slashed the guard across the right side of his face. The group then escaped the scene, fleeing the East 15th Street location.
The injured guard was rushed to Maimonides Midwood Community Hospital and is in stable condition. A T.J. Maxx employee described the incident as shocking but noted that shoplifting is a frequent issue at the store. “It’s like regular people that come here,” the employee said, adding that some thieves steal from the store often.
Police have released surveillance footage of one of the women involved in the attack, though as of Tuesday night, none of the suspects had been apprehended.
