Sen. Lindsey Graham said Sunday that if President Biden withdraws from the 2024 presidential run amid worries about his fitness for office following a disastrous debate with former President Trump, the Democratic replacement would “dramatically” alter the contest’s dynamics.
The president has stated unequivocally that he will remain in the race. However, the South Carolina Republican, a close confidant of former President Donald Trump, stated on “Face the Nation” Sunday that he believes “before this is all said and done, President Biden will most likely be replaced.”
“If Biden steps down, Harris is going to have to pick somebody to help her,” he said. If she receives a nomination, the race will significantly alter from its current state. I hope people are thinking about it on our end.”
If Mr. Biden steps down, Vice President Kamala Harris is very definitely the most likely candidate to lead the ticket, though this is not guaranteed. If she were to lead the ticket, she would choose another Democrat as her running mate. Graham clarified that the vice presidential nominee from both parties can significantly influence the November election.
“If I were President Trump, I would make sure I picked somebody that could add value in 2024,” Mr. Graham added.
The former president has been teasing his running mate announcement for weeks and is anticipated to make his choice at or near the Republican National Convention later this month. Graham has indicated support for fellow South Carolina senator Tim Scott for the position, stating that he might help broaden the map.
But Graham said that, in addition to Scott, three other Republicans are being considered for the position: North Dakota Gov. Doug Burgum, Sen. Marco Rubio of Florida, and J.D. Vance of Ohio. He also mentioned Glenn Youngkin, the governor of Virginia, as someone who “should be” considered, emphasizing that “if we win Virginia, we win.”
“So I’m hoping President Trump is looking for a VP pick that can not only carry on the American First agenda after he leaves but also win in 2024,” Graham told the crowd.
