Missing Women Found After Suspicious Fire in Plattsburgh

State Police in Upstate New York have confirmed the discovery of human remains belonging to two women who had been missing for several days. The remains were found on their property after a suspicious fire destroyed their home.

Timeline of Events

On December 12, 2024, at approximately 8:30 p.m., the New York State Police were alerted to the disappearance of two women.

Three days later, on December 15, 2024, officers were called to a fire at 2 Birch Street in Plattsburgh, which was the home of the missing women.

The following day, on December 16, 2024, State Police expanded their search in the surrounding areas, where they ultimately discovered human remains.

The police are currently processing the scene and executing multiple search warrants as part of their ongoing investigation to gather evidence.

Victims Identified

Though the victims have not yet been formally identified by the New York State Police, sources confirm that the women were Miranda Wade and Karen Besaw, who were the subjects of the missing persons reports.

Possible Suspect

Joe Hewitt, reportedly the boyfriend of one of the women, was arrested on Sunday, December 17, 2024, on charges of tampering with evidence. However, State Police have not confirmed whether the arrest is connected to the women’s disappearance.

Hewitt, who resides at 2 Birch Street in Plattsburgh, is listed as a registered sex offender in the National Sex Offender Registry, according to NBC5.

Authorities have stated that they believe this is an isolated incident and assured the public that there is no ongoing threat.
