Phoenix, Arizona(KGLO News): One person died and two others were critically injured after a crash on northbound I-17 in Phoenix Sunday morning, according to the Department of Public Safety.
Around 1 a.m., Arizona Department of Public Safety troopers were investigating a possible DUI driver stopped in the second lane of northbound I-17 near Northern Avenue in Phoenix.
While the troopers were clearing the vehicle, two other vehicles crashed in the freeway backup. As they worked to clear those vehicles, another vehicle speeding crashed into the two vehicles. One driver died, and two others, including a minor, sustained life-threatening injuries.
The driver, who was traveling at high speed, is undergoing evaluation for possible impairment. AZDPS detectives are collaborating with the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office to determine the charges the driver will face.
There is no estimated timeframe for reopening the northbound lanes of I-17, as the investigation continues.
