A 22-year-old Kansas City man accused of illegally purchasing a gun linked to the February mass shooting at the Kansas City Chiefs Super Bowl rally has been sentenced to probation.
According to The Kansas City Star, U.S. District Court Judge Howard Sachs sentenced Ronnel Williams Jr. to five years of probation on Thursday.
Williams’ public defenders did not respond to the Associated Press’s attempts for comment as of Friday.
In July, Williams pleaded guilty to charges of conspiracy to make false statements during the acquisition of a firearm. He admitted that he lied to purchase a gun for a 19-year-old who was too young to buy the weapon legally.
The 19-year-old who received the gun also faces similar charges and is scheduled to be sentenced on December 12. Law enforcement noted that the weapon was later reported stolen by the 19-year-old.
Williams’ lawyer has maintained that Williams had no direct connection to the shooters involved in the mass shooting. Authorities discovered the firearm after the February incident.
The shooting occurred during the Super Bowl rally, resulting in one fatality and approximately 24 others suffering injuries. Three individuals have since been charged with murder in connection with the case.
