Former Minneapolis police officer, Derek Chauvin, is currently serving his sentence for the murder of George Floyd at a facility in Oklahoma.
Chauvin was previously held at the Tuscon Federal Correctional Institution in Arizona but was recently moved to the Oklahoma Federal Transfer Center.
The Federal Bureau of Prisons stated that they are unable to disclose the rationale behind Chauvin’s transfer due to concerns regarding privacy, safety, and security.
Chauvin’s attorney filed a brief on July 31, requesting that the judge in his federal case grant his motion to vacate the charges related to the death of Floyd. In the motion, filed last November, Chauvin expressed that he would not have pleaded guilty if he had been aware of the theories put forth by Kansas pathologist Dr. William Schaetzel. According to Schaetzel, Chauvin’s actions did not cause Floyd’s death.
In July 2022, Chauvin received a 21-year sentence on federal charges for violating Floyd’s rights. The sentence was given as part of a plea deal.
There are currently no future hearings scheduled for that particular case.
