Dangerous wind chills and heavy snow expected in the Midwest through Monday

A powerful Arctic blast is gripping the Midwest, bringing dangerously frigid temperatures and heavy lake-effect snow to millions over the weekend.

The National Weather Service warns that wind chills in the Dakotas and Minnesota could reach -30°F, posing a threat to life. Temperatures are expected to be the lowest since mid-February across much of the northern Plains and Midwest. Residents should prepare for frostbite hazards in minutes and keep survival kits handy while traveling.

From Friday to Monday, the Weather Prediction Center predicts severe lake-effect snow on Lake Michigan, Lake Erie, and Lake Ontario. Snowfall might reach several feet in areas like Buffalo and Syracuse, New York. Interstate driving on I-90 and I-81 may be practically impossible due to drifting snow and whiteout conditions.

We ask communities in Wisconsin, Michigan, and Illinois to stay informed and take precautions to avoid hazardous conditions.

As weather conditions increase, bundle up, stay informed, and minimize your travel. Check local forecasts and follow emergency procedures to ensure your safety.
