EDMOND, Okla. — On Monday, a convoy of cars and trucks circled Edmond North High School to support a student who was told he couldn’t fly an American flag from his pickup truck.
Community members gathered near Danforth Road and Kelly Avenue before 7:30 a.m., with Sky 5 counting over 50 vehicles as they made their way to Edmond North High School.
The rally was in support of Edmond North senior Caleb Horst, who shared that school officials had informed him he couldn’t display an American flag on his truck.
“I’ve never really had problems with it before, and it’s our First Amendment right, so it’s kind of hard for them to infringe upon our rights,” Horst told KOCO 5.
Edmond Public Schools explained that while it’s a common practice not to fly flags on campus, it’s not an official policy. Officials stated the practice aims to prevent distractions and disruptions and to avoid safety issues in the parking lot.
On Monday, parents, students, and other community members expressed why they believed the rally was significant.
“If it’s the flag today, what is it tomorrow?” said Lynn McNeely, a parent of an Edmond North student. “It’s not a protest. It’s not political. It’s not about red. It’s not about blue. It’s about red, white, and blue. So, where do we draw the line?”
