Bystanders Lift Taxi Off Pedestrians After Midtown Crash

Taxi Hits Six Pedestrians Near Herald Square; Bystanders Rescue Victims

A yellow taxi struck six pedestrians near Herald Square in Midtown Manhattan on Christmas Day, prompting bystanders to spring into action to rescue those pinned beneath the vehicle, according to authorities and witness accounts.

The incident occurred around 4 p.m. near Macy’s on West 34th Street and 6th Avenue after the 58-year-old driver suffered a medical episode, causing the taxi to veer onto the sidewalk.

Video footage captured the dramatic moment when witnesses worked together to lift the taxi off a 9-year-old boy and a 41-year-old woman trapped beneath it. Ryan Tucker, a tourist who assisted, described the scene to WPIX, recounting how the boy’s leg was pinned under a spinning tire. “A couple of gentlemen got the car off … we lifted it back and pulled the boy out,” Tucker said.

The boy sustained a laceration to his right thigh, and the woman suffered a head injury. Both, along with a 49-year-old woman who had a leg injury, were taken to a hospital and are expected to recover. Tucker noted that the pinned woman remained conscious and communicated with her son throughout the ordeal.

Three other individuals — a 19-year-old girl, a 37-year-old woman, and another 49-year-old woman — were injured but declined medical attention at the scene.

No further details about the incident were immediately available. Authorities are continuing their investigation.
