Authorities have announced that the mother of the newborn baby girl, who was left abandoned in a tote bag outside a building in the Bronx over the weekend, is now facing criminal charges.
Delfina Galvez, a 26-year-old woman, surrendered herself to the police on Monday evening following the release of surveillance footage by the NYPD.
The footage showed a person suspected of abandoning an infant on a rain-soaked sidewalk outside a building in Morrisania early Sunday morning, according to authorities.
Galvez faced charges of reckless endangerment, acting in a way that put a child at risk, and leaving a child behind.
A newborn baby girl, seemingly just a few days old, was discovered abandoned outside a building on Reverend James Polite Avenue near East 167th Street at approximately 6 a.m. The infant was found inside a tote bag, securely wrapped in blankets, according to authorities.
Someone called 911 after hearing the baby’s cries, according to law enforcement sources.
After speaking to the caller, the police discovered the infant inside the discarded bag, according to sources.
The baby was brought to Jacobi Medical Center by EMS workers and is currently in stable condition, according to the police.
Several hours after the NYPD released a video allegedly depicting Galvez carrying the bag, she surrendered. In the footage, she can be seen walking slowly along the sidewalk, with a hood pulled up over her head. She was wearing a black face mask and either glasses or sunglasses.
Authorities said that Galvez, who resides just a block away from the location where she allegedly abandoned her newborn daughter, does not seem to have any previous records of arrests in New York City.
