According to authorities, a Michigan City graveyard was the site of a car crash caused by an impaired driver who crashed through a fence.
The incident occurred at Greenwood Cemetery on June 22 around 9 p.m.
According to the Michigan City Police, a car driven by Debra Underwood, 35, broke through the fence on the north side of the cemetery and caused damage to a grave marker.
Someone who saw the incident reported that she was sprinting from the vehicle towards her residence on Cloud Street.
Upon arrival, the authorities found her inside the enclosed patio of the residence with injuries sustained from the crash, resulting in blood on her face and arm.
According to reports, Underwood was reportedly under the influence of drugs at the time, as evidenced by the fentanyl and oxycodone found in her possession upon arrival at La Porte County Jail.
The charges against Underwood include possession of a narcotic drug, which is classified as a Level 5 felony. Additionally, he is facing charges for cemetery mischief, also classified as a Level 5 felony. Along with these, there are charges for operating a vehicle while intoxicated, which is a Class A misdemeanor. Lastly, Underwood is also charged with leaving the scene of an accident, which is a Class B misdemeanor.
