Drew Johnson, an escaped inmate from the South Mississippi Correctional Institution in Leakesville, was apprehended on Christmas Day.

On Christmas Eve, convicted murderer Drew Johnson managed to briefly escape from a Mississippi state prison. However, his freedom was short-lived as he was captured near the South Mississippi Correctional Institution in Leakesville. The Mississippi Department of Corrections made the announcement on Facebook Wednesday afternoon.
Convicted murderer Drew Johnson returned to prison on Christmas Day, following a brief escape from a Mississippi state prison on Christmas Eve.
Johnson, aged 33, was apprehended close to the South Mississippi Correctional Institution in Leakesville. He had managed to escape from the prison on Tuesday afternoon, as reported by the Mississippi Department of Corrections on their Facebook page on Wednesday afternoon.
According to CNN, Mississippi authorities have described Johnson as “very, very dangerous” and “desperate” following the discovery that he had escaped from prison.
According to a Facebook post by the George County Sheriff’s Department, individuals tend to display greater generosity during the Christmas season and lower their guard. The post advises people to remain vigilant and cautious.
Johnson pleaded guilty to multiple violent crimes and received a life sentence on February 14, 2022.
Johnson received a life sentence in Tennessee for murder, with no chance of parole. Additionally, he was also sentenced to 15 years for each of his other offenses.
Johnson is facing a murder charge in Rankin County, Mississippi, with the case still pending.
Located in Greene County, near the state line with Alabama in southeastern Mississippi, the South Mississippi Correction Institution stands as the state’s newest prison.
The Greene County Emergency Management office issued an alert when Johnson managed to escape the facility around 3:30 p.m. CST on Tuesday.
