Man Faces Charges in August Shooting That Killed Food Truck Operator

Man Charged in Kansas City Mass Shooting That Killed Food Truck Operator, Injured Five

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – A man has been charged in connection with a mass shooting in Kansas City, Missouri, that claimed the life of a beloved food truck operator and left five others injured.

Derrion Turner faces charges in Jackson County Court, including second-degree murder, two counts of armed criminal action, unlawful possession of a firearm, and unlawful use of a firearm.

According to prosecutors, Turner is accused of fatally shooting Dyamund Shields, the operator of the Chicken Mac-n-Cheese food truck, during an incident on August 5 around 1:50 a.m. near East 70th Terrace and Prospect Avenue. Surveillance footage reportedly captured Turner in the area, where four vehicles were parked near 7022 Prospect Avenue.

Court documents state that a detective reviewing the video identified a man resembling Turner, who was wearing black shorts, a black T-shirt, and black tennis shoes, along with an ankle monitor on his left ankle. GPS data from the monitor confirmed Turner’s presence at the scene during the shooting.

The footage showed Turner standing with a group of armed individuals near the vehicles when another group passed by. Tensions escalated as one person from the second group turned to look at Turner’s group. Turner then allegedly pulled out a firearm and opened fire.

The situation devolved into what court documents describe as “a chaotic exchange of gunfire” involving multiple individuals, leading to Shields’ death and injuries to five others.

Shields’ family expressed their heartbreak over the loss. “He was just incredible,” said his mother, Nechelle Kidd, in an interview with KSHB 41. “He had a love for his children, his siblings, and this community. He loved working his food truck and serving others.”

Shields was at the location operating his Chicken Mac-n-Cheese food truck when the tragic incident unfolded. Authorities continue their investigation into the shooting, and Turner remains in custody.
