After Hurricane Beryl, new details have emerged about a lawsuit in which several private citizens are suing CenterPoint Energy for their losses, pain, and suffering during and after the storm.
It’s a familiar tale since Beryl: no power leading to heaps of spoiled food that had to be discarded. Now, three individuals are seeking reimbursement through a detailed 30-page lawsuit against CenterPoint.
The lawsuit claims CenterPoint failed to prepare the grid for a foreseeable weather event and refused to take responsibility for the system’s failure. It also accuses CenterPoint of not properly maintaining its lines and equipment and not adequately investing in infrastructure.
The plaintiffs suing CenterPoint claim they were without power for 80 hours or more, leading to significant losses, including everything in their refrigerators and freezers. They seek to hold CenterPoint accountable by demanding reimbursement for the spoiled food.
The lawsuit also notes that last year, CenterPoint Energy earned over $6.5 billion in profits, while the median income for a Houstonian is around $50,000 annually. It argues that the company’s billion-dollar success is due to its customers, and the least it can do is help restock Houston’s fridges.
