A tragic incident occurred in Indianapolis as a 17-year-old lost his life in a crash that took place shortly after the police stopped chasing the car in which he was a passenger. The police were investigating a group of armed teenagers when they began pursuing the car but stopped the chase before the fatal collision occurred.
On Sunday, a group of young males were reported to the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department for displaying firearms in the downtown area. As officers were heading to the location, they received information that the juveniles had stashed the guns inside a parked car. The police were dispatched to investigate the matter.
Upon arriving in the vicinity, law enforcement officers initiated a pursuit on foot of the pack of teenagers. Afterward, a juvenile male was apprehended and subsequently released, while the remaining individuals in the group were unable to be located.
At the Real Time Crime Center of IMPD, analysts observed a known individual, who is prohibited from owning firearms, entering the parked car and carrying a gun with him. Furthermore, two other juveniles were also present in the vehicle, with 17-year-old Terryoun Mays among them.
IMPD reported that the responding officers tried to stop the car once it left the downtown area. The driver complied at first and pulled over, but then failed to follow additional commands and drove away.
According to IMPD, the officers pursued the car until it went out of sight, and eventually had to terminate the pursuit. Following that, the officers pulled over to the side of the road and came to a complete stop.
IMPD reported that the suspect’s car had crashed and flipped over on Brill Road’s 2600 block, approximately three minutes later. The driver and two passengers, including Mays, were critically injured and transported to a nearby hospital for treatment.
The Marion County Coroner confirmed on Monday morning that Mays, a 17-year-old passenger in the car, had succumbed to his injuries and passed away.
Upon the crash, IMPD immediately dispatched accident investigators to the scene to carry out an investigation. Upon searching the vehicle, law enforcement officials discovered a drum-style magazine, two firearms, and multiple bullets.
IMPD has not yet released any further information. This article will be updated as soon as new information becomes available.
