Law enforcement in Niagara County had a busy week as they dealt with individuals who ended up on the naughty list and received handcuffs instead of a lump of coal.
Despite the holiday season, it appears that some individuals refuse to take a break from their criminal behavior.
In fact, according to FindLaw.com, crime tends to increase during this time of year. Specifically, there are six types of crime that see a surge during the holiday season: drinking and driving, domestic violence, shoplifting, online crimes and scams, burglaries, and porch piracy.
Fortunately, Niagara County doesn’t experience a significant number of homicide cases, which is undoubtedly a positive aspect.

Violent crime in New York state is relatively low overall, according to World Population Review. The murder rate stands at 4.8, which is significantly lower than Mississippi, the state with the highest murder rate at 23.7.
However, it’s important to note that a murder rate of 4.8 is still a cause for concern. Governor Kathy Hochul of New York State is optimistic about reducing crime across the state and plans to close five prisons by 2025.
According to the Governor’s budget book, the closure of these facilities is expected to enhance efficiency.
Correctional Facility Efficiencies. The Executive Budget includes legislation to allow the State to act expeditiously to right-size and eliminate excess capacity by allowing for the closure of up to five correctional facilities with 90 days’ notice. This legislation will allow for an increase in the operational efficiency of the correctional system.
