IOWA CITY — Mason City High alum Miguel Recinos has won the starting placekicking job for the University of Iowa football team. The junior joined the team in 2014 as a walk-on and has played in four games. He is 1-for-3 in career field goal attempts, hitting a 47-yarder against Wisconsin last year. He’s also 2-for-2 in extra point attempts.

IOWA CITY — Nathan Stanley will be Iowa’s starting quarterback on Saturday against Wyoming. Stanley had been competing with Tyler Wiegers for the starting job since spring practice. As a true freshman, Stanley beat out Wiegers and Drew Cook to be the backup to C. J. Beathard last season. Stanley completed five of nine passes for 62 yards during his appearances in seven games last season. Iowa and Wyoming kick off at 11 o’clock on Saturday morning, with the pre-game starting at 9 o’clock on AM-1300 KGLO.

AMES — Iowa State played its best football of 2016 at the end of the season and hopes to carry that momentum into Saturday night’s opener against Northern Iowa.

That’s Iowa State coach Matt Campbell. The Cyclones were 3-9 a year ago and one of those losses was to UNI in the opener. Campbell feels his team will be better prepared this time.

Campbell says he has been impressed with how his team handled pre-season camp and is now interested to see how they handle game week.

UNI has seven new assistant coaches this season but Campbell says the Panthers will still reflect head coach Mark Farley.

Improved run defense is a must for Iowa State which gave up an average of 218 yards on the ground per game. An inexperienced defensive line will need to step up.

CEDAR FALLS — Northern Iowa coach Mark Farley says the Panthers will have to play much better Saturday night if they want to make it two in a row over Iowa State. The Panthers spoiled Matt Campbell’s debut as Cyclone coach with a 25-20 win.

Farley says this will be a much better Cyclone squad.

Farley says they have not even talked about what happened last year.

Farley says the Cyclones found their identity late last season.

Kickoff at Jack Trice Stadium on Saturday night is scheduled for 7 o’clock.
