Mason City fire sends five to the hospital
MASON CITY — Five people were taken to the hospital late last night after a house fire in Mason City. Firefighters were called shortly before 11:15 last night to the home at 22 North Jefferson owned by Opportunity Village. Three residents and an employee were inside the home at the time of the fire. One of the residents heard a popping sound that alerted them to the fire. Fire officials say another person helped pull the four house occupants out, with all five then being taken to Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa to be treated for smoke inhalation. Fire officials say the entire structure suffered smoke damage while up to 50 percent of the house was involved in the fire. No cause has been released at this time.
